Hackers Take Over Mayor Aki Sawyerr’s WhatsApp Account, Use Number to Solicit Funds

Freetown Mayor Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has warned the public that her WhatsApp account was hacked.
She says her number is still being used to send messages and solicit money.
The Mayor said the account was compromised on Wednesday, September 9th.
She urged the public to disregard any WhatsApp messages appearing to come from her, until she issues another statement.
She did not say how the account was compromised, or whether anyone has lost money.
Her warning comes amid growing concern over WhatsApp account takeovers in Sierra Leone.
In August, the National Cybersecurity Coordinator, Mariama Yormah, warned that criminals are taking over accounts to deceive victims’ friends and relatives.
