Sierra Leone’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Mohamed Rahman Swaray, has renewed the call for permanent African seats on the United Nations Security Council.

He made the call on Saturday, October 10th, in Tripoli, Libya.

Mr Swaray was speaking at the fourteenth Ministerial Meeting of the African Union Committee of Ten, which handles Security Council reform.

He addressed the meeting as coordinator of the Committee of Ten.

The minister restated Sierra Leone’s support for Africa’s Common Position, as set out in the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration.

He described Africa’s limited representation on the Council as a historical injustice.

He argued that the continent’s fifty-four United Nations member states deserve a stronger voice in decisions on international peace and security.

Africa is demanding at least two permanent seats, with full privileges, including the right of veto.
