SLTU Pushes Government for Salary Review Ahead of School Reopening

August 27, 2026News

The Sierra Leone Teachers Union, SLTU, is calling on the Government to review teachers’ salaries and improve their conditions of service.
Western Regional Secretary of the Union, Foday Kuyateh, says many teachers earn less than the equivalent of 100 US dollars a month.

He said the Union has written to Government ahead of the reopening of schools in September to request discussions on salaries and other welfare issues.

Kuyateh said teachers with university qualifications are sometimes earning much less than workers in other public institutions with similar qualifications.

He also warned that some teachers are leaving the profession because of financial difficulties and better-paying opportunities elsewhere.
