Lawyers’ Society Files Supreme Court Action Challenging 2025 Amendment Bill

September 6, 2026News

Two members of the Lawyers’ Society, Thomas Moore Conteh and Tamba Kellie, have filed an application with the Supreme Court challenging the purported passage of the Constitution of Sierra Leone Amendment Bill, 2025.

The application, filed Thursday, is being pursued in the lawyers’ individual capacities because government has not allowed the Society’s corporate registration.

The applicants are asking the court to interpret the voting threshold and procedure required for a constitutional amendment to pass validly.

The Society says the action isn’t meant to challenge Parliament’s authority, but to ensure constitutional procedures were properly followed, and that if the court finds they weren’t, it should declare the Bill’s passage null and void.

The Society said protecting the rule of law is central to its mandate and pledged to keep the public updated on the case’s progress.
