“It is Not For Me” – Popular SLPP Politician Quits Party Politics Ahead of 2028 Polls

September 1, 2025News

Mohamed Gento Kamara, a former mayor candidate for Freetown under the SLPP, has officially announced that he is stepping away from politics.

Speaking in a recent interview with Radio Democracy, Gento said politics is not for him and confirmed that he has no plans to continue in the political space. He explained that while he entered politics with good intentions, it’s not the path he wants to follow moving forward.

Looking back on the 2023 election, Gento said his goal was to promote peace and reduce tribal division, especially in Freetown. He believes that through his campaign, he was able to contribute to a more peaceful process and send a message of unity. He also confirmed his support for President Julius Maada Bio’s re-election during that period.

Gento added that his decision to run for mayor was to show that anyone, no matter their tribe or background, can rise to leadership. He believes that message was clearly sent.

Even though he is stepping down from political activities, Gento made it clear that he is still a proud member of the Sierra Leone People’s Party and will continue to support the party in his own way.

He ended by saying that he now wants to focus fully on his business and continue contributing to national development from the private sector.
