APC MPs Walk Out of Parliament During Constitutional Amendment Bill Debate
Lawmakers from Sierra Leone’s main opposition party, the All People’s Congress, have walked out of Parliament after a dispute over voting rules for constitutional changes. Opposition Leader Abdul Kargbo led 49 MPs out of the chamber, arguing that a vote regarding how electoral commissioners are appointed was invalid because it failed to reach a two-thirds majority.
The walkout followed a 96 to 41 vote to keep existing rules that allow the President to appoint election officials. While the opposition insists every constitutional vote requires a two-thirds majority, ruling party MPs argued that a simple majority is enough when voting on individual clauses.
