Two people have died and another person is missing after a market boat capsized on the Makona River at the Nongoa crossing on Tuesday, September 15.
The boat was carrying traders returning to Sierra Leone from the weekly market in Nongoa, Guinea. Guinean authorities said 43 people were registered on board.

Rescuers managed to save 41 people from the water. The two people who died were a woman and an 18-month-old child.

A Guinean soldier is still missing, according to the mayor of Nongoa rural commune, Tamba Gabriel Bongono. Search operations were continuing for the missing passenger.

Authorities said the passengers were wearing life jackets, which helped reduce the number of deaths. There were reports that the boat may have developed an engine problem before being carried by the current.
