Military Convoy for President Doumbouya’s Sierra Leone Visit Sparks Public Outcry

July 23, 2026News

The visit of Guinea’s President Mamadi Doumbouya to Sierra Leone has sparked public discussion over the heavy security arrangements that accompanied his arrival, including armoured vehicles and other security support. The level of protection led some members of the public to question whether such measures were necessary for a visiting head of state. But Presidential Spokesperson Alpha Khan says the arrangements were part of standard diplomatic and security protocol, following requests made by the Guinean delegation and approved by the relevant Sierra Leonean authorities.

According to the Presidential spokesperson, the security package reportedly included armoured vehicles, helicopter support and naval security arrangements. He stressed that although President Doumbouya came to power through a military takeover, he is currently recognised as Guinea’s head of state and his international engagements are conducted through established diplomatic channels. Khan also defended the close relationship between Sierra Leone and Guinea, saying the two countries share deep historical, cultural and family ties. He further rejected speculation that the heavy security suggested fear or any unusual intention, arguing that governments have a responsibility to protect visiting heads of state.
