“Ain’t Nothing Cultural About Cutting Clitorises” – Josephine Kamara

August 29, 2026News

Purposeful Advocacy Director Josephine Kamara has renewed calls for Sierra Leone to introduce an explicit law banning Female Genital Mutilation, or FGM.

Speaking on August 28 at the launch of a cross-border publication on zero tolerance for FGM in West Africa, Kamara said FGM should be treated as a human rights violation and not protected as culture.

She said she remains hopeful that Sierra Leone will strengthen its laws against the practice, despite concerns over the removal of an explicit FGM ban from amendments to the Child Rights Act.
