“We Cannot Take Charge of Exams” – ACC Boss Ben Kaifala Clarifies Commission’s Role
The head of Sierra Leone’s Anti-Corruption Commission, Francis Ben Kaifala, has clarified that his agency is not responsible for supervising school exams. Speaking at a civic town hall on education, he stressed that while the commission protects system integrity, it is not an exam-monitoring body.
The commissioner acknowledged that the agency previously took a heavy-handed approach to stop cheating because people were not listening. However, he explained that the commission now plays a supporting role, allowing the proper education authorities to run public exams while officers step in only when laws are broken.
In the past, the agency’s elite squad made headlines for arresting students and teachers involved in exam fraud—a tactic that drew both praise and criticism over human rights concerns. Kaifala emphasized that keeping national exams honest remains a shared responsibility for the entire country.
