President Bio Refuses to Sign Constitution Amendment Bill, Seeks Supreme Court Opinion
Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has paused signing a major constitutional amendment bill, sending it to the Supreme Court for legal review instead. The decision follows a formal petition from a governance group challenging how Parliament passed the law.
The political dispute centres on voting rules in Parliament. Opposition lawmakers walked out of the vote last month, arguing the bill failed to reach the required two-thirds majority, while the Speaker ruled that a simple majority was enough.
