Sierra Leone Government Receives $1.5 Billion Cash
Sierra Leone’s Finance Minister, Ahmed Bangura, has announced that the country earned $1.5 billion from mineral resources in 2024.
Report confirms that most of the revenue has not reached essential services like schools and hospitals.
Bangura highlighted systemic issues obstructing the flow of funds to the public. Poor agreements and limited oversight have hindered the effective management of the nation’s mineral wealth.
From 2019 to 2024, Sierra Leone generated nearly $4 billion from mining, but only about 5 percent was allocated to national development. The weakened Geological Survey Department lacks the resources to manage and monitor mining activities effectively.
