Opposition MP Criticizes Government’s Le 10 Education Subsidy as Insufficient
The government’s education subsidy of ten leones per pupil has been criticized by Opposition Member of Parliament Abdul Karim Kamara, who says the amount is far too small to ease the financial pressure on schools and parents.
In a recent Facebook post, Hon. Kamara questioned the real impact of the subsidy, pointing out that a packet of bread now sells for twelve leones, a bundle of water for ten leones, and even a can of soft drink goes for thirty.
He said that with prices like these, the ten-leone subsidy barely covers basic daily costs.
His comments have led to discussion online, with many Sierra Leoneans agreeing with him and calling on the government to take another look at the subsidy.
Others believe that even though it’s a small amount, it still shows an effort to support education.
As the cost of living continues to rise, many are wondering whether more can be done to ease the burden on families and schools.
